Variety Lab – London in the Rain

Sartorial is a 2010 release from the London-based house of Penhaligon’s. The perfumer behind is well known master, Bertrand Duchaufour. Master Duchaufour’s inspiration was Savile Row Norton & Sons workshop, thus the name Sartorial.

Sartorial is a fragrance of many layers. Like a painter’s work consisted of many quick brush sweeps. Interplay of notes is incredible, unreal and so incompatible and cacophony expected, but eventually perfectly mashed. Metallic notes, aldehydes, wax, honey, Proustian linden blossom, lavender, flowers... Perfection.
It opens with cold, metallic, almost offensive note. The opening is spicy and peppery as well. Soon Sartorial becomes mildly sweet classic lavender barbershop scent. Lavender is sweetened by flowery notes and very pale honey accord. The leather is deep in the background in a manner of almost phantom presence. The base is mild, made mostly of musk and some pale powdery woodsy, shady notes.
Sartorial is a very balanced, and formal scent. Perfectly cut for formal and business occasions. Nothing groundbreaking, but versatile and well made. Yes, it really reminds me of Brut, but more complex, refined and upscale version.
Formal, masculine, regal, dignified, well mannered. My girlfriend adores this classic masterpiece. A quintessential British barbershop scent. IMO the best Penhaligon's to this date. A Dr. Watson's signature scent.
