L’Occitane Eau des Baux – Autumnal Warmth (Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, 2006)

Incognito – Autumn Song

In October 2007. I accidentally stumbled upon Eau des Baux in just opened L’Occitane shop. Immediately after sniffing I decided to purchase it. Eau des Baux was one of the first symptoms of freshly diagnosed love for perfumes. As a cypress note lover Eau des Baux was my heaven. Things are little bit changed today, but still I have admiration for this fragrance. After several years of my fragrance journey, now this fragrance smells to me somehow rustic. Fragrance layers are rough, but well executed. My review is based on the vintage formulation, while current is really bad. Like a shadow of its former glory.

Eau des Baux opens very spicy with strong cardamom and pepper notes. Initial pronounced spiciness mellows soon, and it is merged with green, authentic cypress and gentle incense. This incense has some smoky aspect. The strong Tonka bean is responsible for the sweet aspect of Eau des Baux. Although not listed I do detect some golden tobacco note. The whole composition is rounded with beautiful, and not overly sweet vanilla reminding me of library smell or waxy, vanilla candle.
Eau des Baux smells very natural and is well rounded fragrance. Unfortunately, new regulations and cost reduction killed its honest, rustic, brown leaf charm. The composition is not so full bodied. Eau des Baux was hidden treasure in a modest, simple brown bottle. The warmth of a fireplace in an autumn dusk.
