I have a strong admiration for fragrance
houses which rely on one perfumer only. This happy synergy between the perfumer
and company results in a clear vision of fragrance development process and
deliverables. Rodrigo Flores – Roux is already kind of in-house perfumer for
John Varvatos. In an interview, Mr. Flores – Roux described his own style as
chiaroscuro, and it is the precise description of this fragrance.
John Varvatos for Men is at first sniff
a generic fragrance, but beneath the simple surface are numerous dark and
bright layers. All these layers are perfectly polished and harmonized to create
an olfactory balance. Brighter fruity notes of plum and fig are juxtaposed to
darker and plushy suede accord fortified with some woodsy notes. This main
juxtapose is accompanied by the short lime note in the opening, and spicy notes
of pepper and cinnamon in the heart. There is also some, to my nose,
unidentified darker herbal entity. The summarized composition is masculine in a
classical manner, yet so modern, clean and wearable. In my European eyes, a quintessentially
American. Relaxed, masculine and free. It garners many compliments of the
opposite sex, although I prefer to be a little bit stronger and dirtier.
John Varvatos for Men reminded me of my
naive high school days, first rock concerts, cheap booze, and permanent laughter
with my long gone high school friends. It proved me I do still cherish some boyish
vibe. A priceless feeling.
John Varvatos is not one of the
favorites, but definitely not by a mistake in my collection.
