Narciso Rodriguez For Him Musc Collection – Janus of the Fragrance Game (Francis Kurkdjian, 2009)

Fun Lovin’ Criminals – Love Unlimited

In 2009 Narciso Rodriguez launched a second fragrance for men – For Him Musc Collection. It is a flanker of the great For Him from 2007. Musc Collection was a limited edition, and now in 2017 is almost completely gone from the market. I am not a big fan of reviewing discontinued fragrances. Reviewers often tend to hype these virtually unavailable fragrances, but For Him Musc is such great fragrance I just have to write a few words.

At the first look or sniff For Him Musc looks very simple. Humble note breakdown, red berries, iris, musk, synthetic vibe. Just another mediocre release. It opens with strong musk, iris and red berries. Then, is this review over? No. It takes some time to fully appreciate this composition. Personally, it took almost two years to understand and feel the fine nuances of Musc.
Musc has a deliberately synthetic nature (an undeliberate oxymoron). It is created to expose all the multiple nuances of synthetic molecules. It possesses strong contemporary, cold, but sexy urban vibe.
Red berries from the start are easily detectable, but they don’t smell like natural berries. More like a sweet shadow of red berries. They are present, but cannot vouch they are not some kind of olfactory mirage. The iris is again semisynthetic with wet powdery aspect. It reminds me of entering the flower shop with its humid atmosphere. The musk is huge, and also multifaceted. At one point is clean, like a clean cotton candle, on the other some darker amber, animalic note emerges. However, this dark side is well hidden and not easily detectable. Probably the Janus-like musk is created by using the multiple musky molecules, like a Takasago’s Musk T or Oxalide T, but one should be a professional to distinguish these complex musky aspects. Deep in the background, I sensed some already smelt part of the original For Him like a touch of patchouli (could be also a part of the dark side of musk) and green violet leaf fougere tendencies.
The funny thing about this Musc it is also a pronounced duality while wearing it. While being extremely contemporary executed, Musc Collection to my girlfriend smells extremely retro. Retro, and elegant to be more precise. Sometimes rather cheap, but successful like shabby love phrases.
I really like this Kurkdjian’s extremely intelligent composition. Unfortunately, it is harder to find these days.
